Rock Steady Crew 32nd Anniversary 2009 , 23rd – 26th July, New York City. The RSC anniversary is like a hip-hop family party. With members of the crew past and present in attendance, the vibe is relaxed but focused on the business of b-boying. Day 1 of the battling is the UK Champs US qualifier but unlike the other National eliminations, the format of the battles are in the form of Freinemies. Frienemies is about representing in the ciphers. Every B-boy and B-girl is on their own! No preset battles. Legs explained the concept. “The idea really formed in the early to mid 80’s, breaking was at an all time high throughout the world. Crews were rolling thick and a lot of them were at peace. The only time they didn't get along was when it was time to battle in the club. Rock Steady Crew and New York City Breakers were going to places like Negril, The Roxy, Kennedy High School and other places where jams were going down. No one was worried about hurting someone’s feelings or concerned with battling their own friends, but rather battled with a fierce will to win. We were all "FRIENEMIES". ‘Frienemies” is the place to battle that person that you chill with on a regular basis and show him/her that they’re not as good as they brag about all the time”. The battles kick off with 3 circles or ciphers each with a number of b-boy calling out each other to battle. There is no holding back as notching up battles are what will take 3 breakers to the finals. The judges are unknown to the battling b-boys, indeed they are in the battles themselves! Crazy Legs calls out “who’s got 3 battles?” hands go up in the air. “I got 4” someone shouts back. This is how it progresses through 6 and 7. People are calling out their crew members and strangers alike in a bid to make the finals. After an while, Legs calls and end to the cipher stage and the judges now make themselves know. They pow wow a bit and then announce the final will be between Gravity (Dynamic Rockers), Kid Glyde (Dynamic Rockers) and Morris (Flexible Flave) . The battle starts in rapid fashion with each of the 3 dancers laying down the challenge to each other but it’s Morris that keeps the energy highest with sick combinations and nice style. He takes the decision and the win for the second year in a row! Speaking after the battle Morris calmly states, he is going back into the lab before the UK Champs. “My stuff is looking the same to me right now, so I’m going to work out some new sets for the Champs. I coming for the win this year”
