UK B-BOY CHAMPIONSHIPS, WORLD FINALS 2007 - LINEUP: POPPERS
The success and popularity of the World Popping Battle make it one of the most eagerly anticipated competitions at the Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championships 2007 promises another incredible display of dance skills from 8 of the world’s best. Popping is the dance of ‘hitting’ your muscles to the beat of the music to create a snapping effect. It involves funk, illusion, mime and musicality and creates an amazing spectacle of standing dance. A heavyweight line up, including entrants from US, France, Germany, Korea, Japan, Brazil and the UK, all capable of taking the title, set the stage for some awesome battles.

Jsmooth started popping in 2002, he is a member of the popping crew ‘Machine Gone Funk’. His passion for popping has taken him around the world entering and winning many popping competitions including ‘How Tha West Was Won’ in Hollywood and the ‘Hook Up’ in Osaka , Japan . As defending champion, he has pressure on his shoulders, but he is one of the top new school poppers and never fails to impress.

The crowd loving (and vice-versa) entertainer who never fails to make an impact wherever he goes. Salah is one of the best battlers on the planet and was the finalist at the 2004 championships. With his incredible movement, comedy and musicality, he will definitely be one of the favourites again for this years title.

The champion of 2005, Mike was unable to return last year to defend his crown so he will be out this year to prove that it wasn’t a one off. Winner of numerous solo titles worldwide including Juste Debout and Bboy Summit, Mike’s incredible musicality and technique make him a formidable popper capable of out dancing nearly any opponent.

Kei is the winner of this years Japanese Eliminator and will now have the opportunity to prove his international worth at the 2007 World Finals. He is a member of the incredible Fab 5 Boogs popping crew from Japan which includes members Gucchon and Acky (both former competitors on the Brixton Academy stage). Kei is a dynamic popper with a high energy boog style. He has a highly respected name worldwide and will definitely bring the Japanese fire when he hits the stage this year.

The Regional Conflict Champion makes his debut appearance at the B-Boy Championships this year. Carlos is a great natural dancer and a great showman to go with it. With the support of the UK crowd, Carlos will be amped up and ready for battle and with a great shot at the title, he will definitely be out to keep the prestigious trophy on home soil.

 


Mechanikool

Mechanikool is back for a second year having proved himself once again as one of the UK’s finest by qualifying at Regional Conflict. Having had an unlucky draw against last year’s champion (J Smooth) in the first round, the East London popper will be looking to cause some upsets this year. Mechanikool specializes in a combination of animation and robot and has studied under the legendary Poppin Taco.

Robozee is a natural performer and a crowd favourite. One of Germany’s best poppers, Robozee started dancing with electric boogie in 1998 until 2000 when he discovered the original boogaloo and poppin styles which he has been focusing on since. He was due to compete at the UK Champs in 2004 but had to withdraw because of illness. Back this year, he most definitely has the skills to pose a threat to the title.

Prince Mio has been dancing for five years. His dance style uses a combination of boog, animation, tutting, waving and blow ups to try to create a unique approach to popping. He is the co-founder of the Animatronik Project who perform abstract and contemporary theatre shows.

Franqey was a semi finalist in 2005 (losing to the winner) and returns this year with the experience of the big stage. Probably the most improved popper over the last couple of years, Franqey combines his natural jazzy style with great poppin technique. Looking to add a major popping title to his belt, he will definitely step on stage with all guns blazing.


Richard

Hailing from Marseille in the South of France, Richard makes his debut appearance in the UK at this year’s Championships. Richard has a great allround popping style mixing boogaloo with waves, robot, animation and tricks. Sure to be a favourite with the crowd and hungry to battle, he will be out to prove his worth on the world stage and is most definitely capable of taking the heads of the big name poppers.

 
KALSSE - FINLAND

Kalsse

Kalsse, from Helsinki, Finland, has been popping for 7 years. He is part of a Helsinki based crew called, Intelligent Funk Movement, which consists of 4 poppers. His style is mostly based on popping, boogaloo and waves, but he has also been strongly influenced by bboying, as a result of mainly practising with bboys. During the recent years he has won the Finnish championships in popping. He qualified by winning the Scandinavian qualifications for the UK B-Boy Champs.

Originally from China but studying in Manchester, Billy has been popping for seven years. He is one of the first people to start popping in China and was part of the X-Style bboy crew. Billy will be one of the competition underdogs looking to cause an upset at his first visit to the UK Championships stage.

After winning Battle of the Year 1998 in Germany - along with his former bboy crew, Rockforce - Jonathan “Bionic” Bayani gained international acclaim and is now recognized as one of the world’s fiercest competitors in popping. This has allowed him to compete and perform all over the World. Bionic is featured in numerous bboy videos, which have influenced generations of younger dancers. He has also taught master classes Worldwide. Bionic is currently working with his Bay Area based dance crews, Soul Sector and Machine Gone Funk. He was recently one of the few dancers selected by Red Bull to be a part of their Red Bull Beat Rider Program.


Nikodemus

Co-Founder of the world famous Machine Gone Funk crew, Nikodemus is a direct and proud student of many OG's. He dances all styles of popping including boog style, robot, tutting, waving, and animation, making him a funky and versatile popper. His credits include victories at Freestyle Session Japan World Finals 2004, BBoy City 2007, City vs City 2004 and 2005, and crew victories at Freestyle Session 10 & How Tha West Was Won.  Nikodemus was also chosen to be a part of the Red Bull Beat Rider program 2007.
